Friendship and Sacrifice

The deep bond between characters like Arnsen and O'Brien, or Garth and Willard, is tested by perilous journeys, with one friend often sacrificing safety or sanity to save or follow the other.

Callahan hesitates but ultimately pulls Vanning into the ship, sacrificing his own safety for the group.

Friendship and Sacrifice is one of the patterns Short Fiction by Henry Kuttner returns to. The chapter notes above are from this edition’s companions — open those chapters to see how the book stages the idea rather than treating the theme as a slogan.
