The Comte de Mascaret belongs to a lineage where thwarted desire and dramatic revenge are hereditary legends, told and retold at the family table. He carries the weight of ancestors who hanged themselves over faithless lovers, a heritage that shapes how those around him interpret every romantic gesture. His presence in the story establishes the world of inherited passion and its costs, a backdrop against which the younger generation's own desires will be measured.
