Chapter 1

Chapter 2
The Horla (First Chapter)
The narrator describes his love of solitude and his secluded life in a house surrounded by a large garden. After attending a performance of Sigurd, he returns home late at night and experiences an inexplicable unease. He hears strange noises from inside his house, and later, in a state of panic, he flees. The next morning, he learns that all his furniture has been stolen. He chooses to keep his terrifying experience secret and eventually consults doctors, who advise him to travel.

The narrator recounts his travels through Italy, Sicily, and Africa before returning to France and settling in Paris. Bored, he decides to explore Normandy and, while wandering through Rouen, discovers a secondhand shop filled with his own stolen furniture. He reports the theft to the police, but the dealer vanishes overnight, and the furniture mysteriously returns to his house. The narrator, terrified and unable to prove the dealer's guilt, voluntarily commits himself to an asylum to escape the fear of the dealer's return.

Chapter 5
The Dead Hand
A group of friends gather for an evening of drinking and storytelling when a friend, Pierre, arrives with a gruesome souvenir: a skinned, dried hand that once belonged to a notorious criminal. He hangs it on his bell-pull, but soon after, he is violently attacked in his bedroom, nearly strangled by an unseen assailant. The hand disappears, and Pierre is left traumatized and insane. Months later, during his funeral, gravediggers unearth the skeleton of the original criminal, whose hand has been severed, suggesting a supernatural revenge.
