Lawton wakes on the riverbank accusing Langford of stealing his ship, only to confess that his men were lifted in preying arms and dumped like dead timber. His rage and grief are raw, and his certainty that the creatures' ship lies three hundred yards away pushes Langford toward the crossing. He is the human cost of the story's mystery, a commander who lost everything and can only point the way forward.
