Bill Cullen

Bill Cullen is the steady presence whose account of a drifter's drowning and whose talk of Martian telepathy gives the whispering desert its first unsettling shape.

First appearance: the hounds of tindalos

As a major figure in Short Fiction, Bill Cullen is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.

Emaciated and desperate, Bill struggles with thirst and homicidal thoughts toward Van Wyck, ultimately leading their swim to the cannibal island.

Bill moves through the camp as a reliable witness, the man who tells Molly how the vicious rat fell into the canal and never came up. His report frames the drifter as a sun-crazed maniac, but the story's deeper unease comes from what he and others sense in the Martian air. He matters because his calm, factual voice makes the later horror of Larsen's return feel like something the camp should have seen coming.
