Chapter 1
I
The chapter opens with a majestic bull elk, Spread Horn, moving through the wilderness of Smoky Land in July. It describes the signs of the month visible to the wild creatures and the elk's cautious behavior. Spread Horn encounters the scent of man at a spring, a novel and menacing presence, and flees after giving a warning cry. Two men are revealed at the spring, one angry about spilled whiskey, signaling the intrusion of humanity into the primeval landscape.
Chapter 2

The Old Colonel confronts Hugh Gaylord about his dissolute lifestyle, urging him to embrace a more rugged, outdoor existence. He proposes that Hugh travel to the Smoky Land region of Idaho to hunt a notorious cougar named Broken Fang, hoping the adventure will transform him into a 'man of his hands.' Despite initial reluctance, Hugh agrees to the plan.
Chapter 3

Hugh Gaylord, still a tenderfoot in the wilderness, is tempted by his Indian guide Pete to visit a nearby sheep camp for whisky. As twilight falls, Hugh experiences a fleeting moment of connection with the silent, vast forest, and hears a distant shot. Meanwhile, a camp-robber bird discovers the men's camp and begins exploring their supplies, amusing Hugh.
Chapter 4

Hugh Gaylord and his guide Pete walk to the sheep camp, where they discover the murdered herder. Hugh experiences a profound transformation as he confronts the wilderness and the vulnerability of the sheep.
Chapter 5
V
Hugh Gaylord experiences a profound sense of familiarity with the wilderness as night falls over the sheep camp. He and the Indian guide, Pete, discover the body of a murdered herder. Pete explains that the killing is likely due to the range conflict between cattlemen and sheepmen. Hugh decides to report the murder and return to civilization, though he feels unexpected regret at leaving the forest.
