As a supporting figure in Scarlet Sister Mary, Daddy Cudjoe is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
A community elder Mary seeks out for help after July leaves.
Daddy Cudjoe lives at the edge of the plantation's moral world, where root-work and old knowledge survive alongside Reverend Duncan's black Book. He gives Mary the charm that brings July back and later restores her withered body to its old supple grace, a gift she cherishes as if it were God's own. His presence in the novel keeps the reader aware that the community's Christianity and its older magic are braided together, not opposed.
