Scarlet Sister Mary

The chapter introduces the Gullah community of Blue Brook Plantation, describing their pride, heritage, and isolation. It paints a picture of a self-contained world shaped by slavery, tradition, and the cycles of nature, where life and death are intertwined and the old ways persist.
Chapter 4
II
This chapter describes Mary's upbringing in the Quarters under Maum Hannah and Budda Ben, her childhood and adolescence, her religious conversion and baptism, and her deepening relationship with July despite opposition from her guardians who prefer June. It also details Budda Ben's crippling and bitterness, and July's playful marking of Mary's ear.

On her wedding morning, Mary lies in bed reflecting on her childhood home and her impending marriage to July. Maum Hannah discovers that Mary and July have already had sexual relations, which she condemns as a 'scarlet sin.' Mary is filled with shame and fear of God's judgment, yet she still loves July and hopes for redemption through marriage.
