Resurrection · Question

What does “resurrection” mean for Nekhludoff?

Answer

Title echoes Easter gospel — spiritual life after death of old self. For Nekhludoff, resurrection means sustained acts: court appeals, prison visits, land redistribution attempts, Siberia march, reading Gospel seriously. It is not one miracle but habit forming against habit of privilege.

Tolstoy also implies societal resurrection needed — church, state, property law. Personal plot stays incomplete to stress collective reform. Compare to Raskolnikov’s confession — similar arc, different theology and politics.
