Translator's Preface

Prince Dmitri Nekhludoff awakens in Moscow and is confronted with the trial of Katerina Maslova, a woman he seduced and abandoned years earlier. He recalls his past actions and begins to feel a moral awakening, leading him to seek redemption.
Chapter 5
I
Máslova's journey with the prisoners continues. After traveling by rail and steamboat to Perm, she is allowed to join the political prisoners, which improves her conditions. She marches with the criminal convicts but finds relief from harassment among the politicals, where she meets Mary Pávlovna and Símonson. The chapter depicts a bleak morning start, with prisoners buying food and the officer's harsh treatment causing a disturbance.
