Concepts
Ideas that structure Progress and Poverty by Henry George — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Poverty and Progress
The central paradox of the book: material progress and increasing wealth simultaneously produce deepening poverty, want, and social distress, rather than alleviating them.
Land Ownership and Rent
Private ownership of land is identified as the fundamental cause of inequality, with rent capturing the value created by society and progress, driving down wages and interest.
Distribution of Wealth
The book analyzes how the produce of society is divided among land, labor, and capital, arguing that current economic laws fail to explain why labor's share does not increase with productivity.
Wages and Labor
Challenges the classical theory that wages are drawn from capital, asserting instead that wages are produced by labor, and that competition for land forces wages to a subsistence minimum.
Critique of Malthusian Theory
Rejects the idea that population growth causes poverty, arguing through evidence and logic that poverty stems from social maladjustments, not natural scarcity or overpopulation.
Social Justice and Equality
Argues that equal rights to land are a natural and moral imperative, and that denying this right undermines political liberty, justice, and the foundations of democracy.
The Single Tax on Land Values
Proposes that taxing only the value of land (rent) is the just and efficient remedy to abolish poverty, stimulate production, simplify government, and restore economic equality.
Industrial Depressions
Explains recurring economic crises as resulting from speculative advances in land values that choke production and reduce the earnings of labor and capital.
Human Progress and Civilization
Examines the law of human progress, arguing that civilization advances through association and equality, and that monopolization of land leads to stagnation and decay.
