Concepts
Ideas that structure Poetry by Taras Shevchenko — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
National Identity and Liberation
The book is deeply concerned with Ukrainian national identity, the struggle for freedom from foreign oppression (Russian, Polish, Turkish), and the longing for a return to the glory of the Cossack era, as seen in poems like 'The Night of Taras' and 'Hamaleia'.
Suffering and Exile
Themes of personal and collective suffering permeate the work, particularly through the poet's own exile in Siberia and the depiction of enslaved or imprisoned characters, as in 'A Poem of Exile' and 'The Bondwoman’s Dream'.
Motherhood and Sacrifice
Maternal love, often marked by sacrifice and hidden sorrow, is a central motif, exemplified in 'Naimechka' where a mother serves as a servant to her own son, and in 'The Water Fairy' where a mother's betrayal leads to tragedy.
Social Injustice and Class
The book critiques social hierarchies, serfdom, and the exploitation of the poor by the rich and powerful, as seen in 'To the Rich and Great' and the depiction of the servant Anna's life of labor and penance.
Nature and Landscape as Symbol
The Ukrainian landscape—the Dnieper River, steppes, hills, and viburnum—is used symbolically to represent freedom, memory, and the soul of the nation, often personified and interacting with human emotion.
Faith and Hypocrisy
Religious faith is portrayed both as a source of solace and as a tool of oppression, with sharp critiques of church hypocrisy, iconoclasm, and the misuse of religion by the state, as in 'Iconoclasm' and 'Hymn of the Nuns'.
Love and Loss
Romantic love is frequently intertwined with loss, separation, and death, as in 'Mighty Wind' where a lover seeks to join her beloved beyond the grave, and in 'Kalina' where a maiden mourns at a grave.
Memory and Nostalgia
Nostalgia for a lost homeland and past glories is a recurring theme, with the poet's memories of Ukraine serving as a source of both comfort and pain during exile, as in 'Memories of an Exile' and 'Hymn of Exile'.
