Isolation and Connection
How Poetry develops Isolation and Connection.
Many poems explore the solitude of the lover or the artist, contrasted with the desire for intimate union, whether through physical embrace or spiritual companionship.
Where it surfaces
- VI: I Would in That Sweet Bosom Be
The contrast between the harsh 'rude wind' of the outside world and the peaceful connection sought within the beloved.
- XVII: Because Your Voice Was at My Side
The speaker's connection to the beloved isolates them from a former friend, turning that friend into a stranger.
- XIX: Be Not Sad Because All Men
The beloved is set apart from a hostile world, yet finds solace in the speaker's words of unity.
- He Who Hath Glory Lost, nor Hath
The protagonist is isolated from all others, with only love as a companion.
- All Day I Hear the Noise of Waters
The seabird going forth alone mirrors the speaker's sense of solitude.
- XXXVI: I Hear an Army Charging Upon the Land
The narrator's despair and cry of abandonment highlight a profound sense of isolation after love has departed.
- Tilly
The herdsman's bond with his cattle contrasts with the speaker's solitary bleeding.
- Nightpiece
The adoring waste of souls suggests a solitary, disconnected worship in the vast, voidward night.
- A Prayer
The narrator's solitary cry for union with the beloved, set against a backdrop of dark intimacy.
