Mary Flood Jones belongs to Phineas's Killaloe life, the world of the Finns and the Flood Joneses that he leaves behind for Westminster. She refuses Mr. Elias Bodkin almost ignominiously and would wait forever if Phineas asked, but he is a gentle traitor, distracted by Lady Laura and the grandees of London. Her quiet constancy measures the cost of his ambition, and her mother's sharp-eyed skepticism keeps the romance from turning merely sentimental.
