Peter and Wendy · Question

Why does Wendy go to Neverland?

Answer

Wendy flies because Peter offers story made real — pirates, flight, and a role where her domestic play becomes necessary to others. She also goes to keep John and Michael safe and because nursery life, for all its love, confines a girl who already mothers her brothers. Peter’s charisma and Tinker Bell’s fairy dust literalize the wish to leave rules without losing purpose.

Barrie keeps motives mixed: adventure, vanity, and genuine care. Wendy does not know Peter will forget her or that motherhood in Neverland is labor without growth. The shadow chapter already bound her to Peter by mending him. Going to Neverland is therefore both choice and trap — the novel’s central tension between freedom and responsibility.
