Chapter 1
Peter Breaks Through
The chapter introduces the Darling family and establishes that all children except one grow up. Wendy learns at age two that she must grow up after her mother wishes she could stay young forever. The family lives at 14, and Mrs. Darling is a romantic woman with a hidden kiss that Mr. Darling could never obtain. Mr. Darling is a practical man who calculates expenses meticulously when each child is born. The children have a nurse named Nana, a dog. Strange events occur: leaves from an unknown tree appear in the nursery, and Wendy casually mentions that Peter Pan visits at night. Mrs. Darling becomes alarmed, but Mr. Darling dismisses it. One night while Mrs. Darling sleeps, she dreams of Neverland and wakes to find Peter Pan and a fairy (Tinker Bell) in the nursery. She recognizes him instantly, and he reacts with hostility upon seeing a grown-up.
Chapter 2
The Shadow
The Darling parents, particularly Mr. Darling, recall the fateful Friday evening when Peter Pan lost his shadow. The chapter details Mr. Darling's struggles with his tie, his foolish behavior over Michael's medicine, and his trick of pouring his medicine into Nana's bowl. Mrs. Darling reveals Peter's shadow to her husband, and Nana later snaps it off as Peter escapes through the window. The chapter ends with the family's regret and the shadow being put away in a drawer.
Chapter 3
Come Away, Come Away!
Peter Pan visits the Darling nursery, meets Wendy, John, and Michael, and convinces Wendy to come to Neverland to tell stories and be a mother figure to the Lost Boys. He teaches them to fly with fairy dust, and they prepare to leave as Nana alerts Mr. and Mrs. Darling.
Chapter 4
The Flight
The Darling children, guided by Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, fly toward the Neverland, encountering both wonder and danger. They struggle with flight, Peter's forgetfulness, and the growing reality of the island. Upon arrival, they face the threat of pirates, including the dreaded Captain Hook, and Tinker Bell's jealousy leads Wendy into peril.
Chapter 5
The Island Come True
The Neverland awakens with Peter's return, and the island's inhabitants—lost boys, pirates, redskins, and beasts—begin their cyclical pursuits. The lost boys search for Peter, the pirates hunt the boys, the redskins track the pirates, and the beasts follow the redskins. Captain Hook reveals his vendetta against Peter Pan for cutting off his arm, which was eaten by a crocodile that now pursues him due to a swallowed clock. Hook and Smee discover the lost boys' underground home via a chimney disguised as a mushroom and devise a plan to poison them with a cake. Meanwhile, Tinker Bell, jealous of Wendy, tricks Tootles into shooting Wendy with an arrow, causing her to fall from the sky.
