Dreams and Aspiration

Characters constantly dream of a better life—whether through migration, education, or social change—but face harsh realities that test their hopes, as seen in Pelle's vision of a garden city for workers.

Pelle dreams of a land where money lies like dirt and he can make his father rich, reflecting hope for a better future.

Pelle declares he will own a great farm, and Lasse fantasizes about Pelle's future success benefiting them both.

Pelle's imaginative plans for the future—buying everything, going to America, saving a gentleman's daughter—contrast sharply with the grinding reality of farm labor.

Pelle's dream of going out into the world and getting rich contrasts with Lasse's resigned view that such fortune is only for those born with a caul.
