Lou and his twin Oscar work the Bergson farm as a single cautious unit, rarely apart and rarely bold. When neighbors flee the drought-stricken Divide for river-bottom certainty, Lou is the first to say there's no shame in knowing when to quit — a practicality that reads as defeat to Alexandra. His willingness to follow her schemes while doubting them keeps the family's central gamble tense and unresolved.
