Chapter 1
Part I: The Wild Land
The novel opens on the Nebraska Divide, a harsh and untamed prairie. John Bergson, a Swedish immigrant farmer, is dying, leaving his family—his wife and three sons, Lou, Oscar, and the youngest, Emil—with the difficult task of managing the farm. His daughter Alexandra, however, proves to be the most capable and level-headed, and on his deathbed, John entrusts the future of the land to her, recognizing her strength and vision. The chapter establishes the family's struggle against the wild land and the weight of responsibility that falls on Alexandra.
Chapter 2
I
In the aftermath of Emil and Marie's deaths, Alexandra Bergson grapples with grief and guilt. She resolves to visit Frank Shabata in prison, believing he is the least culpable. During a period of illness, she experiences a vision of a strong, cloaked figure who carries her, bringing her a sense of peace. Meanwhile, a storm prompts Signa and Ivar to search for Alexandra, who has wandered out. Ivar reassures Signa that Alexandra will find spiritual solace.
Chapter 3

Alexandra Bergson visits Lincoln, first wandering the university campus with a wistful longing for her brother Emil, then visiting Frank Shabata in the state penitentiary. She promises to work for his pardon, but leaves feeling as though she and Frank have been wrecked by the same storm. Upon returning to her hotel, she receives a telegram from Carl Linstrum, who has arrived in Hanover and asks her to hurry back, causing her to break down in tears.
Chapter 4
III
Carl Linstrum returns to the Divide after learning of Emil's death from a newspaper. He and Alexandra walk through the fields, discussing the tragedy of Emil and Marie, their love, and the future. Alexandra expresses her enduring connection to the land and her desire to marry Carl, finding peace and freedom despite her grief.
Chapter 5
IV
Emil Bergson visits Amédée Chevalier's farm during the wheat harvest. Amédée, despite being ill with severe abdominal pain, insists on working with his new header and steam thresher. Emil helps put him to bed after he collapses, then rides on to Sainte-Agnes to bid friends goodbye.
