Concepts
Ideas that structure No Treason by Lysander Spooner — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Consent and Voluntary Government
The book argues that legitimate government must rest on the individual, voluntary consent of every person subject to it, and that any government compelling support through force is a form of slavery.
Treason as Breach of Faith
The author redefines treason strictly as treachery, deceit, or breach of faith, arguing that the Southern secessionists were open enemies, not traitors, because they gave fair warning and did not betray a trust.
Critique of Majority Rule
The text rejects the idea that a majority has a natural right to rule a minority, asserting that majorities offer no guarantee of justice and that individual rights are absolute against any number of oppressors.
Political Slavery
The book equates being compelled to support a government one does not want with chattel slavery, arguing that political subjection denies self-ownership and is only a matter of degree from physical bondage.
Hypocrisy of the North
The author condemns the North for waging war to compel obedience while claiming to uphold government by consent, calling this a self-contradictory and fraudulent justification for the Civil War.
Economic Exploitation and War Profiteering
The text argues that the Civil War was driven by Northern financial interests seeking to monopolize Southern markets and control currency, with moneylenders and industrialists using the government to enslave both North and South.
Constitution as Dead Contract
The book contends that the Constitution was a contract only among the founding generation, which cannot bind posterity, and that no living person has voluntarily consented to it through voting or taxation.
Secret Government and Secret Ballot
The author attacks the secret ballot as creating a secret band of robbers and murderers, since it allows individuals to avoid responsibility for the actions of their agents and conceals the true rulers.
Individual Natural Rights
The work emphasizes that each person has natural rights against the whole world, including the right to resist taxation without consent, and that no collective body can legitimately override individual sovereignty.
