Concepts
Ideas that structure Moonfleet by John Meade Falkner — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Smuggling and Lawlessness
The narrative is steeped in the world of contraband, with smuggling as a central economic and social activity in Moonfleet, pitting the villagers against the Revenue and magistrates, and driving much of the plot's conflict and adventure.
Loyalty and Betrayal
Themes of loyalty are explored through the bond between John Trenchard and Elzevir Block, while betrayal is embodied by characters like Maskew and Aldobrand, who exploit trust for personal gain, leading to tragedy and hardship.
Coming of Age
John Trenchard's journey from a fifteen-year-old boy to a man marked by loss, adventure, and moral choices reflects a classic coming-of-age story, where he learns about love, responsibility, and the harsh realities of life.
Greed and Its Consequences
The pursuit of wealth, particularly through the diamond and the Mohune treasure, drives characters to deceit, violence, and ruin, illustrating how greed corrupts and leads to suffering, as seen in Aldobrand's theft and the characters' imprisonment.
Class and Social Decay
The decline of the Mohune family and the village of Moonfleet itself mirrors themes of social decay, with the crumbling manor, empty almshouses, and the struggle between the landed gentry (Maskew) and the common folk highlighting class tensions.
Love and Sacrifice
Romantic love between John and Grace Maskew is a driving force, leading John to risk his life to see her, while Elzevir's paternal love for John and his own lost son David underscores themes of sacrifice and devotion amid adversity.
Fate and Free Will
Characters grapple with destiny, as seen in the Reverend Glennie's sermon on the letter Y symbolizing life's choices, yet the plot often hinges on chance events (storms, floods, encounters) that shape their fates beyond their control.
Revenge and Justice
The desire for revenge, particularly Elzevir's hatred of Maskew for David's death, contrasts with themes of justice, as characters seek retribution or redemption, ultimately questioning whether personal vengeance can ever be justified.
