Fifteen-year-old John Trenchard, an orphan living with his strict aunt in the crumbling village of Moonfleet, becomes entangled with local smugglers after discovering a hidden cache of contraband in the Mohune vault. He befriends Elzevir Block, the innkeeper of the Why Not?, who nurses him back to health after a near-fatal accident. When John accidentally causes the death of the villainous magistrate Mr. Maskew, he and Elzevir flee, hiding in a sea-cave before escaping to Carisbrooke Castle, where they search a well for the legendary Mohune diamond. After a violent struggle, they recover the jewel but are tricked by a merchant, leading to a decade of enslavement on French galleys. During a shipwreck in Moonfleet Bay, Elzevir sacrifices himself to save John. John is reunited with Grace Maskew, his childhood love, and learns that the diamond's curse has brought ruin to all who sought it. The novel ends with John finding redemption through love and loss.
