Georgi belongs to the blue-linen masses whose ten-hour shifts feed the great machines, and he is among the first to give that exhaustion a voice — crying out that Metropolis has gone dumb and that the workers are the mangled food its god-machines chew. His outburst is both plea and indictment, addressed half to a father in heaven and half to Joh Fredersen, and it marks the moment the underground's suffering stops being silent. When the machines fall quiet and a mysterious 'she' calls the weary men away from sleep, Georgi's world becomes the stage on which the novel's uprising begins to gather.
