Chapter 1
Metropolis
The chapter introduces the city of Metropolis, a vast and oppressive urban landscape where the wealthy elite live in luxury above ground while the workers toil in the depths below. The narrative sets the stage for the class divisions and the central conflict between the rulers and the exploited masses.
Chapter 2
The New Tower of Babel
The chapter opens with a depiction of the dehumanized workers marching in unison into the machine center of Metropolis. Freder, the son of the Master of Metropolis, observes the city from his high workshop, reflecting on the contrast between the cathedral and the industrial landscape. He is haunted by a vision from the 'Club of the Sons' and feels trapped by his father's surveillance. He seeks his father, Joh Fredersen, but is conflicted about his own desires and the oppressive system.
Chapter 3

Freder confronts his father Joh Fredersen in the New Tower of Babel, describing the dehumanizing horror of the machine-rooms where workers are drained of their humanity. Joh dismisses his son's concerns, arguing that the workers are deficient and that a substitute—a machine-man—may eventually replace them. Freder reveals that every worker bears his own face, a realization that horrifies him. After the tense exchange, Joh orders Slim to monitor Freder's every move.
Chapter 4

Freder descends into the machine hell of the New Tower of Babel, where he encounters the Paternoster machine and a worker named Georgi. Overhearing Georgi's twisted recitation of the Lord's Prayer, Freder is moved to exchange places with him, taking on the worker's uniform and post at the machine while sending Georgi to find Josaphat. As Freder stands at the lever, he experiences the dehumanizing terror of the machine and discovers a strange plan in the pocket of his new uniform.
Chapter 5
IV
Joh Fredersen visits Rotwang, who unveils his creation—a faceless, obedient female android called 'Futura' or 'Parody.' Rotwang demonstrates its eerie abilities, and the two men discuss a mysterious plan found by Grot in a dead worker's pocket. Rotwang refuses to explain the plan until Fredersen reveals its origin. Meanwhile, Slim informs Fredersen that his son Freder has disappeared.
