Concepts
Ideas that structure Man and Wife by Wilkie Collins — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Marriage and Its Legal Bonds
The book explores marriage as a flawed and often oppressive institution, focusing on the legal loopholes (such as Scottish marriage laws) that allow men to escape commitments, and the devastating consequences for women like Anne and her mother.
Gender and Power
Women are portrayed as vulnerable to the whims and betrayals of men, with society and the law offering them little protection. Characters like Anne Silvester and Mrs. Vanborough suffer due to male duplicity and the patriarchal structures that govern their lives.
Social Class and Ambition
The narrative contrasts the rise of ambitious men like Mr. Delamayn and Mr. Vanborough, who manipulate social and legal systems to gain wealth and titles, with the plight of women and lower-class individuals who are exploited or discarded in the process.
Betrayal and Deception
Betrayal is a central driver of the plot, seen in Vanborough's abandonment of his wife, Geoffrey's treatment of Anne, and the use of false identities and legal trickery to escape marital obligations.
Friendship and Loyalty
The enduring bond between Blanche and Anne, established in their youth, contrasts with the betrayals of romantic partners, highlighting the theme of female solidarity as a source of strength and hope.
Law and Injustice
The legal system is depicted as a tool for the powerful to exploit, rather than a source of justice. Characters use legal technicalities to harm others, and the law fails to protect the vulnerable, particularly women and the poor.
Suffering and Resilience
Characters like Anne and her mother endure profound suffering—abandonment, poverty, and social ruin—yet display resilience, though the narrative questions whether such endurance can ever truly overcome systemic oppression.
Hypocrisy of Society
Victorian society is shown as hypocritical, valuing appearances and propriety over genuine morality. Characters like Lady Lundie and Mr. Vanborough maintain social respectability while engaging in cruel or dishonest behavior.
