Concepts
Ideas that structure Liberalism by L. T. Hobhouse — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Liberty and Restraint
The book argues that true liberty is not the absence of all control, but is founded on law and restraint, which protect individuals from arbitrary power and create the conditions for personal and social growth.
The Individual and Society
Explores the organic relationship between the individual and the community, asserting that individual development and social solidarity are interdependent, and that liberty serves both personal fulfillment and the common good.
Equality and Justice
Presents equality as a core Liberal principle, closely linked to liberty, arguing that removing artificial barriers and ensuring fair conditions (e.g., through law, economic policy, and women's rights) is essential for genuine freedom.
Progress and Reform
Depicts Liberalism as a dynamic historical force that challenges authoritarian structures and drives social evolution through gradual reform, guided by reason and practical experience rather than utopian blueprints.
Democracy and Popular Sovereignty
Examines the role of democratic governance and popular sovereignty in securing liberty, while also acknowledging potential tensions between majority rule and individual rights, and the need for responsible self-government.
Economic Freedom and Social Welfare
Discusses the evolution from laissez-faire principles toward a 'Liberal Socialism' that balances free enterprise with state intervention to ensure fair wages, access to resources, and protection against poverty and exploitation.
Freedom of Thought and Expression
Emphasizes the necessity of intellectual and religious liberty for social progress, arguing that truth emerges through open discussion and that coercion in matters of belief destroys the very foundation of personal and societal growth.
Nationalism and International Peace
Addresses the struggle for national self-determination against alien rule, while also opposing militarism and the use of force, advocating for a world order where liberty and cooperation replace aggression and domination.
