    Book I

    The chapter begins with the death of King Uther Pendragon and the mysterious birth of Arthur. Merlin arranges for Arthur to be raised by Sir Ector. After Uther's death, the kingdom falls into chaos until the miraculous sword in the stone appears. Arthur, unaware of his heritage, draws the sword and is eventually crowned king. He proves his worth through battles against rebel kings and receives Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake. The chapter establishes Arthur's early reign, his marriage to Guenever, and the founding of the Round Table.

  5. Chapter 5

    How Sir Mordred presumed and took on him to be King of England, and would have married the queen, his father’s wife.

    Sir Mordred, having spread false news of King Arthur's death, seizes the throne and attempts to marry Queen Guenever. She feigns agreement but escapes to the Tower of London, which she fortifies against Mordred's siege. The Bishop of Canterbury curses Mordred and flees. Mordred gathers a large army, and many Englishmen side with him, disloyal to Arthur. Word arrives that Arthur is returning from France, and Mordred prepares to meet him at Dover.
