Chapter 1
Lais

Chapter 2
Prologue by Way of Dedication
Marie de France explains her purpose in writing the Lais: to preserve the stories she has heard from minstrels and to offer them to a noble king. She reflects on the duty of those gifted with speech to share knowledge, and she dedicates her work to the king, hoping for his favor.
Chapter 3
The Lay of Gugemar
Gugemar, a knight who scorns love, is wounded by a magical white doe and boards a mysterious ship that carries him to a lady imprisoned by her jealous husband. They fall in love, but are separated when her husband discovers them. The lady is later found by Meriadus, who tries to win her love, but she remains faithful to Gugemar.
Chapter 4
The Lay of the Dolorous Knight
In Nantes, a beautiful and gracious lady is courted by four young barons. Unable to choose among them, she treats them all equally. At a tournament, three of the four lovers are slain and the fourth is gravely wounded. The lady tends to the survivor, but grieves for the three. She proposes to compose a lay called 'The Lay of the Four Sorrows,' but the wounded knight insists it should be named 'The Lay of the Dolorous Knight' because his living suffering is greater than his dead comrades' peace.
Chapter 5
The Lay of Eliduc
Eliduc, a loyal knight of Brittany, is exiled due to slander and seeks service abroad. He becomes seneschal to an aging king in Totenois and falls in love with the king's daughter, Guillardun. Despite his marriage to Guildeluec, he reciprocates Guillardun's love. When his wife discovers the truth, she finds Guillardun in a deathlike swoon, revives her, and selflessly releases Eliduc from their marriage so he can wed Guillardun. Guildeluec becomes a nun and abbess, while Eliduc and Guillardun marry, later both turning to religious life. The story ends with all three finding spiritual peace.
