Lady Audley's mental state is a central theme, with her actions attributed to hereditary insanity, and the novel explores the thin line between sanity and madness as a justification for her crimes.
Social Class and Ambition
The book examines the rigid class structure of Victorian England, with Lady Audley's marriage to Sir Michael representing a calculated rise in social status, and her fear of losing that status driving her desperate actions.
Gender and Power
Lady Audley uses her beauty, charm, and perceived fragility to manipulate men and gain power, yet ultimately remains constrained by patriarchal expectations and the limited roles available to women.
Justice and Morality
The pursuit of justice for George Talboys drives Robert Audley's investigation, raising questions about moral responsibility, the limits of legal justice, and whether ends justify means.
Appearance vs. Reality
The idyllic setting of Audley Court and Lady Audley's innocent facade contrast sharply with the dark secrets, violence, and moral decay hidden beneath the surface.
Love and Marriage
Marriage is depicted as both a romantic ideal and a transactional arrangement for social and financial security, with characters like Lady Audley marrying for status and George Talboys suffering from a failed marriage.
Identity and Self
Characters struggle with hidden or assumed identities, such as Lady Audley's transformation from Helen Talboys to Lucy Graham, and the novel questions the stability of personal identity.
