Chapter 1
Lucy
This chapter introduces Lucy Graham, a beautiful and charming governess in the village near Audley Court. Her captivating presence draws the attention of Sir Michael Audley, a wealthy baronet and widower. Despite his age, Sir Michael falls deeply in love with her. Mrs. Dawson, the surgeon's wife, informs Lucy that she could become Lady Audley if she wishes. Lucy initially reacts with shock and bitterness, but eventually seems to accept the prospect. Chapter 2
II: On Board the Argus
George Talboys, a young man returning to England after three and a half years in the Australian gold diggings, is aboard the ship Argus. He tells a fellow passenger, Miss Morley, the story of his marriage to a penniless girl, his financial struggles, his decision to seek his fortune in Australia, and his eventual success. As the voyage nears its end, he becomes increasingly anxious about his wife's welfare, fearing that something may have happened to her during his long absence.
Chapter 3
III: Hidden Relics
Phoebe Marks shows her cousin Luke around Audley Court while Lady Audley is out. Luke is awed by the opulence, and Phoebe discovers a secret drawer in Lady Audley's jewel casket containing a baby's shoe and a lock of hair, which she takes, hinting at a hidden secret.
Chapter 4
In the First Page of the Times
Robert Audley, a lazy barrister who never practices, learns of his uncle's marriage to a young woman. He encounters his old friend George Talboys, who has just returned from Australia with a fortune, eager to reunite with his wife. At a coffeehouse, George discovers a newspaper announcement of his wife Helen's death.
Chapter 5
V: The Headstone at Ventnor
George Talboys learns of his wife Helen's death from a newspaper announcement, collapses from the shock, and is cared for by his friend Robert Audley. The next day they travel to Ventnor, where George confirms the news, visits the cottage where she died, hears the landlady's account of her final days, and orders a headstone for her grave.
