Chapter 1
The Professor and His Family
The chapter introduces Professor Otto Liedenbrock, his nephew Axel, and their household in Hamburg on May 24, 1863. The Professor, a brilliant but impatient mineralogist and geologist, rushes home early, causing alarm. Axel describes his uncle's character, his scientific reputation, and his eccentricities, including his rapid walking, restless eyes, and tendency to lose his temper during lectures. The household includes Gräuben, the Professor's goddaughter, and Martha, the cook. Axel, an orphan and the Professor's assistant, shares his uncle's passion for geology.
Chapter 2
A Mystery to Be Solved at Any Price
Professor Liedenbrock discovers a Runic manuscript by Snorre Turlleson containing a mysterious parchment with cryptic characters. His obsession with decoding the document leads him to skip dinner, causing concern from his household.
Chapter 3
III: The Runic Writing Exercises the Professor
Professor Liedenbrock deciphers a Runic cryptogram from an ancient parchment, identifying the name Arne Saknussemm and hypothesizing a hidden discovery. He attempts to decode the cipher using Latin and vertical writing methods, but fails, leading to a frustrated outburst.
Chapter 4
The Enemy to Be Starved Into Submission
Axel discovers the key to the cryptogram left by Arne Saknussemm, reading a Latin sentence that reveals a mortal man has penetrated a dangerous secret. Horrified, he resolves to destroy the document to prevent his uncle from forcing him on a perilous journey. However, before he can burn it, Professor Liedenbrock returns. The Professor, frustrated by his inability to decode the cipher, imposes a fast on the household until the secret is unraveled. Axel, left alone, struggles with his conscience and the tantalizing puzzle, while the household faces starvation.
Chapter 5
Famine, Then Victory, Followed by Dismay
Axel, having discovered the key to the cryptogram, reveals it to Professor Liedenbrock, who decodes the message from Arne Saknussemm instructing a descent into the crater of Snæfells to reach the center of the Earth. The Professor, ecstatic, immediately resolves to embark on the expedition, while Axel is dismayed and resolves to keep silent about his own prior discovery out of fear for his uncle's safety. Meanwhile, the Professor locks the house, subjecting Axel and Martha to a famine-like confinement.
