Book Summary
Professor Otto Liedenbrock, his nephew Axel, and their stoic guide Hans embark on a perilous expedition to the center of the Earth after decoding a cryptic message from a medieval alchemist. They encounter prehistoric wonders, survive volcanic eruptions, and emerge through an Italian volcano, transformed by their journey.
In May 1863, Professor Liedenbrock discovers a Runic manuscript containing a cryptogram by Arne Saknussemm, revealing a path to the Earth's core via Iceland's Snæfells volcano. Despite Axel's terror, his betrothed Gräuben encourages the quest. The trio travels to Iceland, descends into the crater, and navigates a subterranean world of giant mushrooms, a vast ocean, electric storms, and living mastodons. After finding Saknussemm's initials, they blast a blocked tunnel, triggering a violent ascent through a volcanic chimney. They are ejected from Stromboli in the Mediterranean, not Iceland. Returning to Hamburg as heroes, Axel marries Gräuben, and the compass's reversed poles are explained by the underground electric storm. The journey tests their endurance, reshapes Axel from timid to confident, and underscores nature's sublime power.
