Concepts
Ideas that structure Interim by Dorothy M. Richardson — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Solitude and Self-Discovery
Miriam repeatedly seeks solitude as a means of self-preservation and inner peace, finding clarity and strength in being alone, yet also struggles with the fear of being left out and the tension between isolation and connection.
Social Performance and Authenticity
The book explores the gap between outward social roles and inner reality, as Miriam feels she is 'masquerading' and growing 'more and more unknown' while performing expected behaviors, and she resents the insincerity of everyday social interactions.
Class and Respectability
The narrative is steeped in class distinctions, from the boarding house hierarchy to the shame of charity organizations, and Miriam is acutely aware of how poverty, gentility, and social judgment shape people's lives and choices.
Memory and the Past
Miriam frequently revisits past scenes, friendships, and missed opportunities, using memory as both a source of pain and a way to reinterpret her present, while also recognizing that happiness in the present is often tied to recollections of the past.
Urban Life and Escape
London is portrayed as both oppressive and liberating—its heat, dust, and noise contrast with moments of green peace and evening skies, and Miriam seeks small escapes within the city, such as balconies, parks, and quiet rooms.
Gossip and Social Judgment
The boarding house is a hotbed of gossip and surveillance, where characters like Mrs. Bailey and the doctors interpret and judge Miriam's actions, leading to misunderstandings and a sense of being watched and misrepresented.
Work and Daily Routine
Miriam's work at Wimpole Street and her domestic chores are depicted as both grounding and draining, with the rhythm of mending, teaching, and office duties shaping her sense of time, purpose, and exhaustion.
Friendship and Loyalty
Relationships with friends like Eve and the Baileys are marked by affection, obligation, and betrayal, as Miriam navigates the fine line between being a confidante and being used, and between loyalty to others and loyalty to herself.
