Concepts
Ideas that structure History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Power and Empire
The narrative extensively explores the dynamics of imperial expansion, the growth of Athenian power from supremacy to empire, and the resulting tensions with Sparta and other states, as seen in the causes of the war and the speeches about Athenian ambition.
War and Its Consequences
The book details the devastating effects of war, including the plague of Athens, the destruction of cities like Plataea, the Corcyraean revolution with its horrific internal violence, and the ultimate annihilation of the Athenian army in Sicily.
Human Nature and Morality
Thucydides examines how fear, self-interest, and ambition drive political decisions and conflict, as illustrated by the Corinthians' critique of Athenian character, the brutal stasis in Corcyra, and the cynical advice of Alcibiades to Tissaphernes.
Democracy vs. Oligarchy
The text contrasts democratic Athens with oligarchic Sparta and examines internal political struggles, such as the debate over democracy in Syracuse, the oligarchic plots in Athens, and the role of faction in cities like Epidamnus and Corcyra.
Alliance and Betrayal
The shifting loyalties of city-states, the breaking of treaties, and the manipulation of alliances are central, as seen in the revolt of Mytilene, the Spartan-Athenian negotiations, and the Egestaeans' deceptive appeals to Athens for aid.
Leadership and Strategy
The effectiveness of leaders like Pericles, Brasidas, Nicias, and Alcibiades is scrutinized, highlighting how strategic decisions, such as the Sicilian Expedition and the defense of Amphipolis, determine the fate of armies and states.
Fate and Human Agency
The interplay between chance events (like the plague or storms) and deliberate human action is a recurring theme, with characters often debating whether outcomes are determined by fortune, divine will, or their own choices.
Identity and Ethnicity
The narrative emphasizes the role of ethnic divisions, particularly between Dorians and Ionians, in shaping alliances and enmities, as seen in the Corinthians' appeal to Dorian solidarity and the catalog of forces fighting for and against Syracuse.
