Concepts
Ideas that structure Hindu Tales from the Sanskrit by S. M. Mitra — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Self-Realization and Mind Training
The introductory note explicitly states that these tales are used as textbooks for a system of mind-training, teaching children to control thoughts and emotions from within and to 'seek to know thyself by means of thyself,' as quoted from the Mahabharata.
Temptation and Selfishness
Subha Datta is tempted by the fairies and the magic pitcher, leading him to abandon his family and become increasingly selfish, which ultimately results in the loss of his treasure and his downfall.
Consequences of Greed
Subha Datta's greed for the magic pitcher and his refusal to choose other gifts, along with his later indulgence in wine, directly cause the destruction of the pitcher and the loss of his newfound wealth.
Loyalty and Family Bonds
The woodcutter's wife and children remain loyal and work hard to survive in his absence, while the story of Putraka highlights the devotion of the three wives to the newborn child and the son's quest to reunite with his father.
Cleverness and Deception
Hari-Sarman pretends to be a revealer of secrets and uses deception to gain wealth and status, while Dhairya-Sila uses a clever plan involving a beetle and threads to escape from the tower, illustrating the value of wit over brute force.
Justice and Retribution
Characters often face consequences for their actions: Subha Datta loses his pitcher due to his drunken boasting, and the wicked Ayasolekha's plots against Guna-Vara and Sringa-Bhuja ultimately fail, leading to the king's regret.
Magic and the Supernatural
The tales are filled with magical elements such as the wish-granting pitcher, fairies, prophetic dreams, a magician who can transform into a crane, and a magic staff and bowl used by Putraka to build a city.
Social Class and Ambition
Hari-Sarman, a poor and lazy man, aspires to rise above his station by pretending to be a wise man, while Putraka, born during a famine, becomes a king through his virtues and wealth, showing the potential for social mobility.
Friendship and Cooperation
The story of the crow and his three friends (a rat, a tortoise, and a deer) emphasizes mutual aid and loyalty, as they work together to rescue the tortoise from a hunter, demonstrating the strength of cooperative bonds.
