Heidi · Question
Why does Heidi go to Frankfurt?
Answer
Heidi goes to Frankfurt because Aunt Deta sells convenience — she takes a job in the Sesemann house and leaves Heidi as companion to Clara, the wheelchair-bound daughter. Deta ignores Heidi’s bond with Grandfather; money and city prestige motivate the move.
Frankfurt offers education and friendship with Clara but costs Heidi’s health. Spyri criticizes adults who treat children as movable property. The doctor later insists Heidi must return to the alp or die of longing. Answers should blame Deta’s selfishness and structural class assumptions, not Clara’s malice.
