Heidi · Question

Who is Grandfather (Alm-Uncle)?

Answer

Grandfather is Heidi’s guardian on the mountain — once shunned by the village, rumored harsh, actually tender once Heidi trusts him. He keeps goats, avoids church after old trouble, and slowly rejoins community through Heidi’s love. His arc is redemption: grim isolation to hymn-singing Sunday walks.

He provides Clara’s recovery space and protects Heidi from Deta’s schemes. He represents nature’s moral clarity — work, food, sleep, sky — without sentimentalizing poverty. Students should cite his church return and care for grandmother’s firewood, not only “grumpy old man.”
