Faith and prayer
Heidi’s simple trust in God’s friendliness contrasts with adult despair — especially Grandfather’s thaw and the grandmother’s hymns.
Spyri writes a Protestant children’s theology without sermons. Heidi learns from Grandmama to speak to God as friend; she prays for Clara, for Peter’s grandmother, for Grandfather’s heart. The blind grandmother’s hymn on the pasture links faith to daily comfort. Grandfather, who avoided church after shame, returns with Heidi on Sunday — redemption through ritual rejoined.
Frankfurt’s ghost panic and Rottenmeier’s superstition show faith gone fearful; Heidi’s prayers show faith as courage. Education theme intersects: reading hymns gives Heidi words for longing. Avoid reducing the book to tract — plot still drives devotion. Link prayer scenes to when Heidi is homesick or Clara tries to walk: faith supports action, not replaces it.
