First appearance: The American Minister
As a supporting figure in He Knew He Was Right, Caroline Spalding is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
Caroline Spalding is the niece of a New England senator, travelling in Europe with her fiercely republican friend Wallachia Petrie when she attracts the attention of the Honourable Charles Glascock. She is drawn to him but troubled by the gulf between his world of Monkhams and her own, and she consults Nora Rowley and the doctrinaire Wallachia before deciding anything. Her deliberation over whether to accept a good man she fears may be too easily led gives the novel one of its few portraits of a woman reasoning her way toward love.
