Concepts
Ideas that structure Hand and Ring by Anna Katharine Green — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Justice and Injustice
The book explores the pursuit of justice through legal proceedings, detective work, and the courtroom, while also highlighting the dangers of suspicion, false accusations, and the pressure to find a scapegoat.
Secrets and the Past
Hidden histories and long-buried secrets—such as Mr. Orcutt's past in Nebraska and Imogene's mysterious origins—drive the plot, shaping motives, suspicions, and the characters' fates.
Identity and Disguise
Characters conceal or misrepresent their identities, from Imogene's foundling origins to detectives assuming roles and the confusion over Craik Mansell's true identity, reflecting the theme of who people really are versus who they appear to be.
Love and Obsession
Romantic attachment becomes intertwined with obsession and control, as seen in Mr. Orcutt's consuming passion for Imogene and the destructive effects of his devotion on his judgment and actions.
Guilt and Innocence
The narrative constantly questions who is truly guilty or innocent, examining both legal guilt and moral culpability, and showing how appearances and circumstantial evidence can mislead.
Deception and Truth
Deception permeates the story—through lies, half-truths, and hidden motives—while the search for truth becomes a central struggle for detectives, lawyers, and the accused.
Fate and Coincidence
The plot relies on coincidences and seemingly fated events, such as the ring's appearance and the stranger's prophetic speech about crime, suggesting that chance and destiny play a role in human affairs.
