In Anna Katharine Green's classic detective novel, a young lawyer's investigation into a widow's murder uncovers a web of hidden identities, secret marriages, and obsessive love. The story begins with the brutal attack on Widow Clemmens in Sibley, New York. Horace Byrd, a gentleman turned secret detective, is sent to assist the district attorney. Suspicion falls on Craik Mansell, but Byrd's doubts lead him to test Imogene Dare, a mysterious boarder who claims a ring found at the scene. Imogene's perjured testimony nearly convicts Mansell, but the intervention of the famous detective Mr. Gryce unravels the truth. Gryce, who had earlier posed as a hunchback, discovers that Mr. Orcutt, a respected lawyer and Imogene's guardian, was secretly married to the widow. Orcutt's obsessive love for Imogene drove him to murder to prevent the widow from revealing his past. After Orcutt's deathbed confession, Mansell is acquitted, and Imogene, burdened by guilt, must come to terms with her role in the injustice.
