Courage and Fear
Characters frequently confront their fears and learn that true courage involves acting despite fear, such as Happy Jack overcoming his terror of Farmer Brown's boy to seek help or safety.
Love and Relationships
Romantic love and companionship are central, exemplified by Peter Rabbit's devotion to little Miss Fuzzytail and the happiness they find together, as well as the growing bond between Happy Jack and Farmer Brown's boy.
Thrift and Preparation
The value of hard work, saving, and planning for the future is highlighted through characters like Striped Chipmunk, who diligently fills his storehouse for winter, while others like Happy Jack learn the consequences of greed and laziness.
Deception and Trust
The narrative explores trickery and the building of trust, from Striped Chipmunk fooling Happy Jack to Old Man Coyote's cunning, and the gradual trust Happy Jack develops in Farmer Brown's boy.
Kindness and Gratitude
Acts of kindness are repaid with gratitude and friendship, as when Farmer Brown's boy saves Happy Jack from Shadow the Weasel, leading to a lasting bond, and when Old Man Coyote returns Peter's favor.
Wisdom and Heedlessness
The stories contrast wise, cautious behavior with heedless actions that lead to trouble, such as Peter Rabbit's tendency to be careless despite warnings, and the cleverness of characters like Striped Chipmunk who stay alert to danger.
