The Stranger

The stranger appears at dusk on the steamer's foredeck, his voice surprisingly uplifted as if compelled to an important announcement, and then is absorbed back into the murmuring group whose words reach the child only in fragments. He is bound up with the talk of a man who called his doom fortune, feared his own shadow, and never came back — a story the elders tell as if they do not want to be heard. He matters because his announcement opens the novel's central question: what it means to go toward the unknown, and whether the dream that drives men down the river is fate, luck, or something they choose.
