Chapter 2
Gallions Reach
Colet, having left his office at Perriams, wanders through London and eventually boards the steamer Altair. The chapter details his departure from the city, his initial experiences aboard the ship, and the beginning of his journey down the Thames, setting the stage for his escape from civilization.
Chapter 3
I
As the steamer moves up the Thames at dusk, young Jim Colet stands with his family and other passengers, gazing toward the distant smoke of London. The adults speak in hushed, fragmentary tones about dreams, fate, and men who never returned from the river. A tall, misty stranger rises and declares that dreams are true if one holds them, better than any proof like London. He names their location as Gallions Reach, and an unseen ship answers with a somber call. The chapter establishes a mood of mystery, longing, and the pull of unknown worlds.
Chapter 4
II
Colet reflects on his dissatisfaction with his clerical work at Perriams, feeling out of place among the commercial world. He is summoned by Mr. Perriam, who reprimands him for failing to handle a dispute with warehouse workers over hours. Perriam warns Colet that he is being tested and must align fully with the firm's interests. Colet returns to his office, contemplating his options and the conflict between his sense of fairness and the demands of business, while his Kuan-yin figurine serves as a reminder of a world beyond.
Chapter 5
III
Colet leaves the office, reflecting on his discontent with his work at Perriams and the nature of commerce. He wanders through London, observing the crowds and feeling disconnected from the city's life. He visits the British Museum, where he is drawn to Eastern art and confronted by a statue of a Lohan, which challenges his Western values.
