First appearance: gallions reach
As a supporting figure in Gallions Reach, Helen Denny is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
Leaves the party to join Colet, attempting to connect with him and offering advice about his business rivals.
Helen moves through the restaurant and smoke-room as the picture of the place, admired by Jimmy but never quite accepting him, talking calmly with Doris while the biologist and critic spar. Her tension lies in that reserve: warm perhaps, but not cosy, a woman whose bosom was meant for privileged joy yet who keeps her own counsel. She matters because her withheld approval measures the distance between Colet's world of bales and casks and the sharper, more modern appetites gathering around him.
