Erewhon · Concepts
Concepts
Ideas that structure Erewhon by Samuel Butler — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Inversion of Morality
The Erewhonians treat physical illness as a crime punishable by law, while moral failings like theft or fraud are treated as illnesses requiring medical care, satirizing Victorian society's arbitrary moral codes.
Critique of Education
The Colleges of Unreason teach 'hypothetics' and a dead hypothetical language, stifling originality and promoting conformity, which satirizes the useless and repressive aspects of traditional education.
Machines and Evolution
The 'Book of the Machines' argues that machines may evolve consciousness and supplant humanity, reflecting anxieties about industrialization and Darwinian theory, though Butler denies mocking Darwin.
Religion and Hypocrisy
The Musical Banks represent a hollow religious institution where people perform rituals but treat the currency as worthless, critiquing organized religion's disconnect from genuine faith and ethics.
Wealth and Social Status
In Erewhon, wealth is equated with virtue and moral worth, with the rich exempt from taxation and revered as 'works of art,' satirizing capitalism and the worship of money.
Family and Parent-Child Relations
Erewhonian society enforces 'compulsory affection' through laws that punish children for disobedience, leading to strained family bonds, which critiques Victorian family dynamics and authoritarian parenting.
Colonialism and Exploitation
The narrator's final scheme to convert Erewhonians into Christian laborers for Queensland sugar plantations satirizes colonial greed and the hypocrisy of using religion to justify economic exploitation.
Truth and Deception
The narrator and Erewhonians alike engage in systematic lying—about health, morality, and intentions—highlighting the theme that society often rewards hypocrisy and punishes honesty.
