The novel explores the tension between American and European values through Sam and Fran Dodsworth's experiences abroad, examining what it means to be American when confronted with foreign cultures and the criticism of American life.
Marriage and Disillusionment
The Dodsworths' marriage deteriorates as Fran's desire for European sophistication and romance clashes with Sam's more grounded, work-oriented American values, leading to infidelity and eventual separation.
The Search for Meaning and Self-Identity
After selling his company, Sam Dodsworth struggles to find purpose beyond his career, grappling with loneliness, the loss of his roles as husband and father, and the question of what defines a meaningful life.
Social Class and Snobbery
The book contrasts the straightforward, merit-based social structure of American business with the rigid, title-obsessed hierarchies of European aristocracy, highlighting the pretensions and insecurities on both sides.
Materialism vs. Culture
Sam represents American industrial achievement and practical know-how, while Fran pursues European art, manners, and intellectualism, raising questions about whether genuine culture can be acquired or is rooted in one's own background.
Loneliness and Aging
As Sam loses his business, his wife, and his children's dependence on him, he confronts profound isolation and the fear of being irrelevant, depicted through his aimless wandering and drinking in Paris.
The American Dream and Its Discontents
Sam's success as a self-made industrialist brings wealth but not lasting happiness, and the novel critiques the emptiness of relentless ambition and the assumption that financial achievement guarantees fulfillment.
