There he meets Fran Voelker, the sophisticated and beautiful daughter of a wealthy brewer, who has traveled extensively in Europe. Despite his initial clumsiness, Sam is captivated by her. They dance, talk by the lake, and he impulsively kisses her during a later walk in the rain. She confesses her desire for a grand life beyond Zenith, and he vows to share that quest with her. The chapter then jumps to 1908, summarizing Sam's rise at the Revelation Automobile Company, his marriage to Fran, and the birth of their two children, Emily and Brent.

Sam Dodsworth reflects on the sale of his company, the Revelation Motor Company, to the Unit Automotive Company. He feels a loss of purpose and identity, but his wife Fran urges him to take a year-long trip to Europe. Torn between his desire for adventure and his sense of duty, Sam agrees to consider the idea.

Sam Dodsworth, after selling his company, faces pressure from Alec Kynance to join the U.A.C. as vice-president, but Sam hesitates, dreaming of a European vacation and a life free from business. He rejects Kynance's work-obsessed philosophy and envisions creating luxury motor caravans, feeling a growing desire for personal freedom.
