Denis arrives at Crome with a manuscript, a hopeless passion for Anne, and a habit of imagining himself the only fully conscious person in any crowd. When he secretly opens Jenny's caricature book and finds seven merciless pages devoted to himself, the discovery punctures his solipsism and leaves him sadder, wiser, and still tongue-tied. His self-conscious longing and wounded vanity make him the novel's tender, ridiculous center.

Henry Wimbush's schoolfellow and exact contemporary, Scogan looks like an extinct lizard and talks like a one-man symposium, cornering guests with theories they never asked for.
