Chapter 1
I
Denis Stone travels by train and bicycle to Crome, the Wimbush estate. He reflects on wasted time, the beauty of the landscape, and his own self-consciousness. Arriving, he finds the house empty and explores it, feeling a sense of isolation and longing.
Chapter 2
II
Denis Stone arrives at Crome and explores the empty house, reflecting on its rooms and his own poetry. He then visits Mrs. Wimbush in her boudoir, where she discusses her belief in astrology and New Thought, reads from Mr. Barbecue-Smith's book, and reveals she has invited him for the next weekend. She also recounts scandalous events at the bathing pool and her past gambling, now replaced by astrological betting.
Chapter 3

Denis and Priscilla join the party for tea on the terrace. Denis feels jealousy and insecurity watching Gombauld flirt with Anne. Mr. Scogan mocks Denis's novel, accurately describing its plot, causing Denis to resolve to destroy it. The chapter introduces the characters and their dynamics, including Mary's earnestness, Jenny's deafness, and Mr. Scogan's cynical wit.
Chapter 4
IV
Denis wakes up and carefully chooses his outfit, then has breakfast with Jenny. He meets Anne in the garden, where they discuss his tendency to over-intellectualize life and his struggle to take things as they come. Denis feels frustrated by his inability to express his feelings for her.
Chapter 5
V
The party visits the Home Farm, where Henry Wimbush shows them the pigs, sow, boar, and bull. The group debates breeding, life, and cruelty, with Gombauld advocating for multiplication, Mr. Scogan prophesying a future of state incubators and free love, and Mary reacting with shock. Denis scratches the boar and reflects on kindness. Old Rowley, a dignified labourer, comments on the pigs.
